Catastrophic Events
7.8 Earth and space. The student knows that natural events and human activity can impact Earth systems. The student is expected to:
(A) Predict and describe how different types of catastrophic events impact ecosystems such as floods, hurricanes, or tornadoes; (Aligned Standard; 8.11c, Bio.12f); World Geography 8b)

Students,
Each link below has some valuable information about environmental impacts from catastrophic events. The more you are willing to read and expose yourself too the better you will be at predicting and describing effects on ecosystems. HURRICANES
Hurricane Impacts on the Coastal Environment eSchoolToday- What is a Hurricane How do hurricanes affect wildlife? frogsaregreen.org National Geographic- Hurricanes-Storm Surge TORNADO

PREDICT and DESCRIBE... IMPACTS on ECOSYSTEMS.... We are not concerned with death toll and the dollar value of damage. We don't care that people lost property or lost friends and family. We care about the small bird that was blown out of the tree and died and how its death along with lots of other birds will impact the local food chain and seed dispersal rates. Focus on the IMPACT on the ecosystem: biotic and abiotic factors. Do focus on loss of life statistics and $'s of damage. Focus on things like: The storm surge destroyed the local oyster breeding ground with large deposits of eroded coastal soil. The destruction of the oyster breeding ground will effect the local fish populations and food webs, as oysters were the primary food source of many organisms. We don't care that the local cost of oysters will skyrocket, local fisherman will be out of work, or that jobs will be lost (We will care about that in another class at another time).

Weathering and Erosion
7.8 Earth and space. The student knows that natural events and human activity can impact Earth systems. The student is expected to:
(A) Analyze the effects of weathering, erosion, and deposition on the environment in ecoregions of Texas; (Aligned Standard; 8.9c; World Geography 3b)
